2) Societies related to Trauma and Orthopaedic Nursing
We found that the International Alliance of Orthopaedic Nursing Associations links in with the major Trauma and Orthopaedic Nursing groups worldwide so have added their details to our blog as an excellent example of worldwide collaboration in advancing nursing practice.
The International Alliance of Orthopaedic Nursing Associations emerged early in 2000 from a series of Internet discussions among the leaders of three national associations of orthopaedic nursing.
Sheila Kelly, President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association (CONA); Julie Stone, Chair of the Royal College of Nursing/Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing; and Anita Meehan, President of NAON. The first conversation focused on exploring interest in the opportunity for the respective organisations to support a shared vision of the future of orthopaedic nursing.
Since that time the member organisations have met at least annually on both sides of the Atlantic and in September 2004, for practical reasons, the alliance was renamed the "International Collaboration of Orthopaedic Nursing" (ICON)
Member organisations now include:
- Asian Association for Dynamic Osteosynthesis (Nursing)
- Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association
- NAON (National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (USA)
- RCN Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing (UK)
The International collaboaration was created for the purpose of advancing the practice of orthopaedic nursing globally.
Vision:A future in which orthopaedic nurses will be responsible for the universal application of the highest standards of orthopaedic nursing practice and care.

A competency framework for orthopaedic and trauma nursing
Competency frameworks are an increasingly common method of driving forward practice quality and meeting the demand for job evaluation and professional development. This paper describes a project supported by the United Kingdom (UK) Royal College of Nursing Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing to develop a competency framework for orthopaedic and trauma nursing. It describes the process employed in the development of the framework, the results of consultation with UK orthopaedic and trauma nurses and the final competency statements. The framework is of relevance to all orthopaedic and trauma nurses who need to work with their employers to identify how the statements can be translated into practice outcomes. There are implications for orthopaedic and trauma nursing education.
